Project Overview
This project is conceived as a calm, dignified coastal retreat—an environment that evokes the rhythm of a relaxed day at the beach rather than a traditional institutional living facility. The architecture draws from the vernacular language of the Florida Panhandle: whitewashed masonry, soft coastal siding, deep porches, and shaded outdoor rooms that blur the line between inside and outside. The narrative focuses on bringing the essence of the Santa Rosa coastline—the soft light, gentle breezes, and natural elements—into the daily lives of its residents, creating a "resort-at-home" atmosphere.
The project is designed to feel less like a facility and more like a coastal village/neighborhood, a place where residents experience dignity, independence, and ease, supported quietly by thoughtful planning and timeless architectural language
The massing is intentionally composed as a series of familiar, house-scaled volumes creating a style that draws from european villages. This village-like approach reinforces independence, legibility, and comfort for residents, while maintaining a cohesive architectural identity. Roofs are simple and expressive, decorative parapets with subtle but expressive gable elements. The design is made to feel more contemporary through the use of standing-seam metal roofs and curtain walls.
Ample covered porches, covered walkways and projecting balconies encourage residents to enjoy the fresh coastal air and strolling between buildings as if strolling along a beachside promenade. Circulation is not liminal it is an experience. Ultimately the architecture intends to encourage social interaction, passive observation and moments of repose.
